David Kaffinetti, the beloved American musician and actor best known for his unforgettable role as keyboardist Viv Savage in the 1984 cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, has passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed on Monday, July 15, 2025, by members of his band, Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom.

Bandmates shared the news in an emotional Facebook post, revealing that Kaffinetti, affectionately known to many as David Kaff, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday night. “Our brother David Kaffinetti peacefully passed away in his sleep yesterday. We are devastated by this event. RIP dear brother,” the post read.

Kaffinetti’s legacy extends far beyond his iconic role in Spinal Tap, where his deadpan humor and stoic expressions as Viv Savage became central to the film’s enduring satire of rock-and-roll excess. He remained closely associated with the fictional band, performing alongside Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer at major comedy and music events throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Beyond the screen, Kaffinetti built a rich career in music. Prior to Spinal Tap, he played keyboard for the progressive rock band Rare Bird, whose 1969 hit “Sympathy” charted across Europe. His work fused jazz, rock, and theatrical flair, earning him quiet respect in the British and American music circuits alike.

After his film success, Kaffinetti made several appearances on Saturday Night Live and joined other musical acts, leaving his imprint on various experimental and blues-rock projects. Though less visible in the 2000s, he continued performing with smaller groups, including Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom, well into his later years.

Fans across the world have taken to social media to honor Kaffinetti’s contribution to music, satire, and film. Tributes have poured in from comedians, musicians, and Spinal Tap fans who grew up quoting his famous line from the film: “Have a good time, all the time.”

David Kaffinetti is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
