Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal stunned Manchester City with a dramatic 4–3 victory after extra time to knock the Premier League champions out of the FIFA Club World Cup in a pulsating last-16 encounter.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for City in the ninth minute, finishing off a neat move assisted by Ilkay Gündogan. City controlled the opening stages and went into the break with a deserved 1–0 lead.
But just seconds after the restart, Marcos Leonardo equalised for Hilal, before Malcom fired them ahead in the 52nd minute with a strike set up by former City man João Cancelo.
Erling Haaland quickly responded for Pep Guardiola’s side, powering home in the 55th minute to make it 2–2 and force extra time after a tense end to normal time.
In extra time, Kalidou Koulibaly headed Al-Hilal back into the lead from a Rúben Neves corner in the 94th minute, only for substitute Phil Foden to level once again for City in the 104th minute, courtesy of Rayan Cherki’s assist.
But the final say went to Marcos Leonardo, who pounced on a loose ball in the box in the 112th minute to secure his second of the night and send Hilal into the quarter-finals.
The result ends City’s perfect run in the tournament and sees the Saudi side progress to face Brazilian outfit Fluminense in the next round.
