Shock gripped residents of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, after a man identified as Jeremiah Kosesochi Nwoke reportedly died while attempting to steal the revered Agemo statue situated at the iconic Itoro Roundabout.
The bizarre incident occurred under the cover of darkness on Friday night, April 11, 2025, near the newly commissioned ultramodern palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland. Eyewitness accounts suggest the suspect had made several attempts to uproot the culturally significant statue, which represents a deep-rooted spiritual symbol in Ijebu tradition.

According to local sources, Nwoke was found lifeless beside the statue early Saturday morning, with visible signs indicating he may have exerted extreme physical effort. The statue, said to be heavily reinforced at its base, had been partially dislodged, pointing to a desperate and prolonged struggle.
Residents who gathered at the scene expressed shock and anger, describing the act as not only criminal but a blatant desecration of their cultural heritage. “This is not just a statue; it’s a spiritual emblem of our tradition. What would make a person risk his life to steal such a thing?” a local youth leader told OtownGist.

Traditional leaders in Ijebu have warned against tampering with ancestral symbols, noting that the Agemo deity is not only revered but spiritually protected. Some community elders believe spiritual consequences may have played a role in the man’s sudden death.
Police authorities in Ijebu-Ode confirmed they are investigating the matter. The corpse was reportedly evacuated from the scene and taken to a nearby mortuary for further examination.
As investigations continue, residents are calling for enhanced security around historical and cultural monuments, especially those carrying deep traditional significance.
