President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu, describing him as a national treasure who brought immeasurable joy to millions and embodied the spirit of Nigerian excellence. Chukwu died on the morning of Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, after decades of service to Nigerian football both as a player and a coach.

The president’s heartfelt tribute, delivered through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, portrayed Chukwu as more than just a sportsman. “Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” Tinubu stated, joining a long list of mourners from within and outside the country.

President Tinubu praised Chukwu for his historic leadership as captain of the Super Eagles during the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where Nigeria clinched its first continental title on home soil. Chukwu’s commanding presence in that tournament earned him the Player of the Tournament accolade and etched his name in the annals of African football.

Beyond his playing career, Chukwu continued to serve the nation, taking up coaching roles including a tenure as the head coach of the Super Eagles from 2002 to 2005, where he led the team to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia. He also managed Kenya’s national team, further proving his continental influence.

President Tinubu noted that Chukwu’s mentorship helped shape a generation of players, many of whom went on to become global football stars. “He mentored a generation of footballers and stood as a pillar of the Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch,” the president said.

As the nation reflects on Chukwu’s legacy, the Presidency has hinted that a posthumous national honour may be considered to immortalize his contributions. Tributes have continued to pour in from world football bodies, local clubs, and former teammates who hail Chukwu as one of the greatest figures in Nigeria’s sporting history.

With Nigeria preparing to host upcoming football tournaments and revamp its national team structure, the memory of Christian Chukwu’s leadership, grace, and patriotism is expected to inspire a new era in Nigerian football.
