A tragic incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, claimed the lives of five children and grandchildren of Pa Bibire Lamidi, the landlord of a collapsed one-storey building. The structure, located at Jegede, Olunloyo, Ona Ara Local Government Area, came down at around 2 a.m. on Thursday, leaving a trail of devastation and grief.
Pa Lamidi, an octogenarian known for treating mentally ill patients, also mourns the loss of some of his patients who died in the incident. Survivors were pulled from the debris with varying degrees of critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention, according to the Oyo Police Command.
In a heart-wrenching interview, Alh. Yidiatu Lamidi, one of Pa Lamidi’s wives, recounted the tragedy. “I was not there when the incident occurred. My husband told me he had just finished using the toilet when he saw the house collapsing. His children and grandchildren were among the victims. Five of them are gone, and some of his patients have also lost their lives,” she said.
When asked if there were any warnings or signs of structural instability, she responded, “The house showed no sign of weakness. This looks like a spiritual attack.”
The incident has left Pa Lamidi, who miraculously survived the collapse, receiving medical treatment at the time of this report. The entire community has been thrown into mourning as they grapple with the aftermath of this unexpected disaster.
The police confirmed that the rescued individuals are being treated for life-threatening injuries in nearby hospitals. The authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and ensure proper assessments are conducted on old buildings to prevent such occurrences in the future.
