A shooting incident at Izuchukwu Junction along Nnobi/Nnewi Road on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, has been clarified by the Anambra State Police Command as an unfortunate case of mistaken identity, unrelated to the upcoming burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Around 7 p.m., tensions rose following reports of gunfire, initially speculated to involve non-state actors attempting to disrupt Ubah’s burial. However, police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga dispelled the rumors, revealing that the shooting stemmed from an error by security operatives trailing a suspect. The operatives mistakenly engaged police personnel at a security checkpoint, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

“Preliminary investigations show the operatives were pursuing a suspect when the gun duel ensued. Tragically, bullets struck the fuel tank of a Toyota Venza Sedan transporting police personnel, igniting the vehicle. Two innocent bystanders sustained injuries during the crossfire and are currently receiving treatment,” Ikenga stated.
