The Federal Government has dispelled concerns regarding the safety of Nigerians living in Libya following recent sanctions by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against the Libyan Football Association. The assurance was issued amid reports of potential harassment sparked by CAF’s ruling, which favored Nigeria and imposed penalties on Libya over the alleged mistreatment of the Super Eagles during a Nations Cup qualifying match.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Minister Yusuf Tuggar, clarified on Monday that Nigerians residing in Libya were conducting their daily activities without interference or threats. This came after CAF’s decision to award points to the Nigerian national team and levy a fine on the Libyan Football Association for their conduct during the match.

Addressing the concerns, the ministry’s statement read, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya for a Nations Cup Qualifying Match.”

The ministry further emphasized that the protection of Nigerian citizens abroad remains a primary responsibility for the government, ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens worldwide. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate that the well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times,” the statement added.

CAF’s ruling, which cited Libya’s misconduct towards the Nigerian team during the qualifier, stirred discussions about the potential repercussions for Nigerians residing in Libya. Despite initial reports suggesting possible retaliatory measures, the government reassured that there has been no confirmation of threats or targeted harassment.

The ministry called on Nigerians in Libya to maintain vigilance while continuing with their routines, reinforcing that diplomatic channels remain active to address any developments swiftly.

This update comes as a relief to many Nigerian families concerned for their loved ones’ safety abroad, emphasizing the government’s active role in international advocacy and citizen protection.
