Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has intensified efforts to combat indiscriminate waste disposal by announcing plans to issue an executive order that will legally sanction offenders. This initiative was unveiled during the launch of new waste management equipment for the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) in Itu Local Government Area.

Recognizing Akwa Ibom’s reputation for cleanliness, Governor Eno emphasized the importance of maintaining this standard. He urged local government councils to collaborate with AKSEPWMA to ensure effective waste management. To incentivize cleanliness, the governor announced that awards would be presented to the cleanest local government areas by May 29, 2025.

The newly acquired equipment includes five waste compacting trucks, four swing arm trucks, one pull-up waste truck with a crane mechanism, and a total of 56 dumpsters of varying capacities. These additions are expected to enhance the state’s waste disposal capabilities significantly.

Prince Ikim, Chairman of AKSEPWMA, lauded the governor’s commitment to environmental sustainability and pledged the agency’s dedication to realizing this vision. National Coordinator of Clean Up Nigeria Limited, Mr. Ene Baba-Owo, also commended the state’s proactive measures and encouraged continuous efforts to uphold environmental standards.

This development underscores Akwa Ibom’s dedication to environmental protection and sets a precedent for other regions aiming to tackle waste management challenges effectively.
