Former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, has dispelled circulating rumors that he is being positioned to become the next President-General of the prestigious Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Ohakim, in a strongly worded statement, made it clear that he has no interest or involvement in any plans to succeed the late President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, at this time.

Addressing the speculation, Ohakim emphasized that his priority is the forthcoming burial of the late Iwuanyanwu, to whom he expressed deep respect, rather than engaging in conversations about leadership succession within the Ohanaeze organization. He called on those spreading false claims to desist from politicizing the situation, stressing that this is a time for mourning and reflection, not political maneuvering.

“My attention has been drawn to a widely published media report linking me with a certain move in some quarters to install me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide. I want to state categorically that I have no knowledge of such plans, nor have I expressed any interest in the position,” Ohakim stated.

He continued by urging well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the rumors and instead focus on honoring the legacy of Iwuanyanwu, who brought peace and unity to both Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the broader Igbo community during his leadership.

“Those behind these falsehoods should stop bringing up the politics of Ohanaeze Ndigbo at this stage. Let Ndigbo mourn and reflect on the late Ahaejiagamba’s [Iwuanyanwu’s] legacy,” he added.

Ohakim’s clear-cut denial comes amidst increased speculation over who will step into the leadership role of Ohanaeze Ndigbo following the death of Iwuanyanwu, who passed away earlier this year.
