Residents of Okpoama in Bayelsa State’s Brass Local Government Area have butchered a massive whale that became stranded along their seaside.

The whale, measuring approximately 15 meters in length, five meters in width, and three meters in height, was discovered dead on the beach on Wednesday morning. It is believed that the whale was carried in by the high tide on Tuesday night and left ashore as the sea receded.

Tarinyo Akono, a local resident and former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council, reported that the community members began butchering the whale upon finding it. They used machetes, hacksaws, and axes to cut the enormous animal into pieces.

This event is reminiscent of a similar incident in August 2019, when another giant whale became stranded in the same community and was likewise butchered by residents for food.
