Netherlands international Weghorst has opened up about his fight with Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi.

Both players clashed during the Netherlands’ quarter-final loss to Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Weghorst came on as a late substitute to score a brace as Holland came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Argentina on the night.

His second goal, a clever free-kick, was the last kick of normal time. But Messi led Argentina to victory in the shootout.

The two teams then clashed on the pitch and in the tunnel following an extremely ill-tempered match.

“I had some moments with Messi. He was surprised at these moments, and he didn’t like it,” the Besiktas striker told reporters when asked about his fight with Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero after he helped his club beat Sanliurfaspor 4-2 on Tuesday.

“I wanted to show this respect after the match. But he wasn’t really open to that, he was still a little bit angry with me. But I see it as a big plus that he knows my name now!”
