The National Bureau of Statistics has disclosed that 1,538 persons were killed in road accidents from April to June this year.

In a report titled ‘Road Transport Data Q2 2022,’ the NBS said 3,282 road traffic crashes were recorded during the period which was a decrease of 1.88% from 3,345 in Q1 2022.

The report said Kaduna State had the highest death toll of 177, followed by the Federal Capital Territory with 111; and Ogun State, 90.

It said the crashes were mainly due to speed violation (2,418) , sign light violation, (382), Dangerous driving (294), among others.

 The report said 5,263 vehicles were involved with commercial vehicles mostly affected with 3,396 (34.20 per cent), relative to other categories of vehicles such as private (1,800), government (67) and diplomatic (0).

“On a year-on-year basis, traffic crashes grew by 3.05% from the same period of the previous year. Disaggregated crashes by categories in Q2 2022 revealed that serious cases recorded the highest with 2,105, compared to fatal and minor cases with 823 and 354 respectively.”
