Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong has praised Nigerian midfielder Joe Aribo following his move to the Saints, stating he is a quality player.

Aribo played a crucial role as the Southampton came from a goal down to record a pre-season win over Ligue 1 side, AS Monaco, on Wednesday.

He recently joined the EPL side in a deal that could rise to £10m, after agreeing to a four-year contract and just like Armstrong, Aribo made his name in Glasgow playing in the Scottish Premiership.

The duo played together in the Scottish topflight when Armstrong was playing for Celtic although they never faced. And they both played vital roles in helping the Saints come from a goal down against Monaco to register a 3-1 win in pre-season.

Asked if the rivalry they shared in the past affected their relationship, Armstrong, 30, said, “We don’t talk about that; I didn’t want to speak to him as soon as he came in. I thought I’d let him lie for a week.

“You can see in training the quality he has – he is very powerful, strong, technical, keeps the ball tight and he is very composed with his movement and his passing, so he is a very good addition, experienced, and we are very happy to have him.”
