Students have been warned to desist from acts that are capable of destroying their dreams and aspirations.

The Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on Students’ Matters, Adeyemi Azeez, stated at the Annual Ramadan lecture and special prayers for the state, held at the June 12 Cultural Center, Abeokuta.

According to Adeyemi, everyone in Nigeria should be baffled by the spate of ritual killings, cybercrimes, drug addiction, rape and other social vices among the youths, saying these are behaviours that are inimical to securing a successful future.

He condemned parents who escorted their children to schools to attack teachers, stressing that the Ogun State Government has put a stop to that.

“You will agree with me that we must all do all that is within our capacity to restore the lost glory of this country by returning to God.

“The youth must constantly be engaged from time to time. They must steer clear of those destructive tendencies like cultism, issues of drug, indecent dressing, ritual killings, rape and the likes that could hinder them from achieving their purpose in life,” Adeyemi said.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Maintaining Your Sanity In An Insane World’, the guest lecturer and Chief Imam of An-Sar-U-deen Central Mosque, Owode Yewa, Sheikh Olasunkanmi Ewuoso, said the increase in social vices was a result of bad parenting.

The cleric maintained that the society at large would have its peaceful coexistence, economic growth and national security threatened if the family institution is in disarray.

Ewuoso emphasised the urgent need to restore good parenting as the key to waging war against all sorts of social misdemeanours, advising the government to enforce strict compliance with legislation to control bad occurrences in society.

He called for the regulation of social media, which, he said, would do more harm than good without thorough regulations.

He regretted that “the new generation believes education is a scam,” expressing concern that the present generation now celebrates immorality.

The Islamic scholar added that promiscuity, drug abuse, cybercrime, cultism and others are acts destroying the world.

“There must be functional economic, family, political and religious institutions; if there is a problem with any of the institutions, there will be a problem.

“If we have missed it at the level of family institution, other institutions will be affected. The solution is to go back to the basis, by abiding in Islamic child upbringing formula,” he said.
