Imo State government, yesterday, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has given anticipatory approval for the construction of a dam in Nworie River to generate electricity in Owerri metropolis.

Governor Hope Uzodimma made this known after a meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Eze Ugochukwu, revealed that the president approved the project after Uzodimma told him the river’s capacity to boost electricity, which would enhance the state’s economy, noting that the conceptual designs are necessary.

The governor also spoke on the state of the construction of the Oguta Seaport as a viable area of economic hub.

He said: “I also asked the President to consider siting a power generating facility in Nworie River, where we have been able to control the flood with balloon technology and the tide has increased.

“And because of the sufficient water in the river now, we can use it to generate electricity to serve the Owerri metropolis.”
