A total of 73 persons have so far died of COVID-19 in Plateau State since May 2020 when the state recorded the first death resulting from the pandemic.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Nimkong Lar, who stated this while giving an update on the pandemic also disclosed that a total of 221,502 persons have been vaccinated against the disease in the state.

A statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Government House, Macham Makut, on Thursday said that the Commissioner gave the update after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by the Governor, Simon Lalong.

The statement noted that Plateau State is 5th after Lagos, FCT, Rivers, and Kaduna in the log table of states most hit by the pandemic.

According to the statement, the Commissioner further stated that so far, Plateau State have tested 91,963 people and yesterday the 305 were tested with 43 confirmed cases.

He said, “Cumulatively, Plateau has 9,443 confirmed cases of COVID-19 while 53 are currently being managed with COVID-19 and he stated also that Plateau State has so far lost 73 people and discharged 9,852.

“He disclosed that Plateau State is on the second phase of the Covid 19 vaccination and at the moment Plateau State have received 100,250 AstraZeneca and 50,004 Moderna vaccines. Since the beginning of vaccination in Plateau State, 221,502 citizens have been fully vaccinated and Plateau State is poised to vaccinate a total number of 2 million by the end of January 2022.

“He warned against refusal to be vaccinated and calls on citizens to reach out to primary health care centers in their Local Government Areas for the vaccines. He called on citizens to make it a point of duty to get vaccinated as the vaccines are available and free, and to also note that the new variant of COVID-19 doesn’t come with the usual signs of cough but only come with pains that leads to death”
