Lagos Teacher Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Defiling 8-Year-Old Pupil

A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced a school teacher, Nwatu Isaac, to life imprisonment for defiling an eight-year-old pupil of El-Bossaa Nursery and Primary School in Epe.

Justice Rahman Oshodi delivered the judgment on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, after finding Isaac guilty of sexually assaulting the child on March 10, 2022.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said in a statement that the court also ordered Isaac’s name to be entered in the state’s Sexual Offenders Register. The order was made under Sections 33 and 38 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law, 2021.

The court held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that the survivor was a child and that Isaac had sexual intercourse with her. The survivor, who was nine years old when she testified, was found to have given credible and consistent evidence.

According to the agency, the child identified Isaac in court as “Master Isaac” and told the court that he took her into the school toilet, where the assault occurred. Evidence from her mother was also presented after she noticed blood on the child’s underwear and genital area when she returned from school.

Medical evidence from the Mirabel Centre was said to have corroborated the evidence of penetration. The court also rejected Isaac’s denial that he went beyond the school gate on the day of the incident, noting that his own evidence placed him at the school at the relevant time.

Justice Oshodi further rejected Isaac’s alibi and suggestions that the child could have been sexually abused by her stepsister or that the school toilet was too small for the offence to have occurred.

During sentencing, the judge said Isaac had abused the trust placed in him by the child and her family. The agency noted that Isaac had been the child’s teacher and was also entrusted by parents in the community to transport their children.

The judge also directed the prosecution to take immediate steps under the Victim Assistance and Witness Protection Law, 2022, to provide whatever protection and support the survivor and her family require. Isaac was prosecuted under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which provides for life imprisonment for unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.
