A graduate of Lagos State University (LASU) is fighting for his life after he was struck by a stray bullet during an attempted robbery targeting a Point of Sale (PoS) operator in the Igando area of Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday along Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede area, where suspected armed robbers allegedly traced a female PoS operator to her residence.
According to eyewitnesses, four armed men arrived on two motorcycles and initially searched for the woman at her nearby shop. When they failed to find her there, they reportedly moved to her home and attempted to force their way into the building.
A resident identified simply as Bode said the occupants quickly locked the entrance, preventing the suspects from gaining access. Frustrated by the failed attempt, the gunmen allegedly opened fire indiscriminately before fleeing the scene.
“The robbers came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They had traced the PoS operator to her house. When they discovered that she was not there, they started calling her and tried to enter the building. After the entrance was locked against them, they began shooting indiscriminately,” the resident said.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victim was walking along the street and had no idea a robbery attempt was underway when he was struck by one of the bullets fired by the fleeing suspects.
The witness said residents quickly rushed the young man to a nearby General Hospital after the attackers escaped. According to one of those involved in the rescue, the victim had recently graduated from LASU and was preparing to begin the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
A police source confirmed that officers responded swiftly after receiving reports of the attack, adding that several spent bullet shells were recovered from the scene as investigations commenced.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said she had not yet been briefed on the incident but promised to verify the report. As of the time of filing this report, no further official update had been issued.
