A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, has called for an end to male/male presidential and governorship tickets in Nigeria.
The former PDP Lagos East Senatorial candidate spoke to reporters in Lagos on Wednesday.
Oyefusi regretted that Nigeria still ranked low in women representation in parliament and other positions.
She said male/female leadership across all levels of authority would encourage women to contribute to nation-building.
The politician observed many countries of the world, including Africa, were improving on women inclusion in governance.
Oyefusi said Nigeria’s population is estimated to be 200,923,640, with women forming 49.4 per cent of the figure – 99,180,412.
“Nigerian women are asking for 35 per cent affirmative action as some other African countries have given women 50 per cent.
“We must continue to work together as women and not be discouraged. We cannot go far if we don’t work together.
“When this is achieved, it would further entrench the participation of women in politics and bridge the gender gap,” she said.
Oyefusi lamented happenings in the Nigerian political system and blamed the decrease in women involvement on violence and patriarchy.
The PDP stalwart charged the legislature to enact a law to give females a certain percentage in both elective and selective offices.
