The Abia State House of Assembly has mandated the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Uche Ihediwa (SAN), to speedily step into the murder of Ugochukwu Chinyere, who was allegedly shot dead by men of the Nigeria Police Force, at Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.

This was coming on the heels of an urgent matter of public importance presented by the member representing Obingwa West State Constituency, Hon Thomas Nkoro, during the Assembly’s plenary session.

DAILY POST reported that Hon Thomas Nkoro had narrated that Chinyere was shot by policemen in an incident at their illegal checkpoint in Umukalika axis in Obingwa LGA.

The lawmaker also said that the victim later lost his life in the hospital despite frantic efforts to save him.

Nkoro further said that motorists in his constituency now live in fear because none of them knows the uncertainty that might befall them from the hands of the trigger-happy policemen in the area.

The Assembly presided by the Speaker, Rt. Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, while resolving further in the matter during its plenary sitting, also implored the Commissioner of Police in the state to do the needful by constituting a panel that will look into the matter so that the officers involved in the killing will be fished out and subjected to the laws of the land for the sake of justice.

The Assembly further commiserated with the family of the deceased and prayed to God to give them the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

Meanwhile, the Abia State of Nigeria Second Supplementary Appropriation bill, 2021 has passed through the first reading at its plenary sitting.

The bill is for a law to make further Supplementary provision of the sum of N18, 925, 403, 929, for the services of the Government of Abia State of Nigeria for the year ending 31st day of December 2021.

The house has however adjourned to Monday, 6th December 2021.
