Troops of EXERCISE GOLDEN DAWN Sector 3 on Monday neutralized a member of IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Soldiers engaged the militants in a shootout at Amauju Isu Local Government Area of Imo.
A statement on Tuesday by Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, noted that they were on a kidnap mission.
He said the ESN fighters targeted a group of personnel known as “Doctors on the move Africa”.
The medical team was providing free care to inhabitants of Amucha Community in Njaba Local Government Area.
Ground forces, including Nigerian Air Force (NAF) 211 Quick Response Group and the Police rescued the doctors and nurses.
“The medical team was escorted to a safe location. The troops went after the hoodlums and made contact with them at Amauju Isu LGA.
“They were found enforcing the illegal sit at home order. In the fire fight that ensued, one of the criminals was neutralized, while others took to their heels.
“One of them, who had escaped with gun shot wound, was later apprehended by the local vigilante and handed over to the police”, the statement disclosed.
The troops recovered one pump action shotgun, 5 live cartridges, one Lexus 300 XR SUV and a mobile phone.
