How Lekki big men avoided tollgate over End SARS

Rich Nigerians living in and around highbrow Lekki in Lagos shunned the toll gate on Wednesday due to the End SARS memorial.

Hundreds of activists and protesters gathered at the venue in commemoration of the October 20, 2020, military shooting.

In a bid to enforce a government order to vacate the toll gate, scores of soldiers marched to the toll gate and opened fire on armless protesters.

DAILY POST gathered that as of Sunday, the big men of Lekki got unsettled and made frantic calls to security agencies.

Influential Nigerians and a number of citizens with flashy cars stayed home or used the Lekki – Ikoyi bridge route.

A police source disclosed there was an increased request for protection services in the days leading up to the End SARS anniversary.

“Those who had escort team reached out to for extra officers, while those without any before now said they wanted agents.

“They were fears that the protest may degenerate, we all know what happened last year. What the command did was general cover at locations”, the officer said on Thursday.

The police were also said to have provided movement advisory to VIPs. They were advised to leave home late in the morning and return before night time.

Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, announced that the ban on gatherings in Lagos “to forestall breakdown of law and order”.

The spokesman cited the murder of policemen, civilians and massive destruction of businesses in 2020.
