The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Imo State, will hold it’s State Congress to elect a new State Chairman and other officials of the State party executives, on August 8th.

According to a document from the party’s national headquarters titled ” Year 2020 Outstanding Congresses”, the party stated that the ward and local government congresses in the State chapter of the party, have been completed, despite protestations from some quarters about the exercise.

Among those in the race for the State chairmanship include Chief Chuks Ajaelu. Former Minister of Commerce and Industries, Engr.Charles Ugwu, has also been speculated to be interested in the contest.

The party had zoned the chairmanship seat to Okigwe zone.

Immediate past Chairman of the party, Charles Ezekwem, had decamped from the party to the All Progressive Congress, APC.

The PDP in Imo State slipped from ruling to opposition party, on January 17, 2020, after the Supreme Court removed Governor Emeka Ihedioha and replaced him with Senator Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Political analysts contend that the party needs a young, vibrant State Chairman to reposition it ahead of the 2023 polls after it passed through internal turbulence as a result of the defection of some members of State Executives to the ruling party.

One of the aspirants for the party’s top job, Chief Ajaelu, has unvield a roadmap to reposition the party to recapture power from a ruthless and fierce ruling party, the All Progressive Congress, APC, in 2023.
