Two young men were nabbed in Owerri, Imo state capital on Monday for allegedly attempting to steal a Nissan pathfinder Jeep.

The act which caught the attention of many road users, occurred at Madumere Street on Monday, 17th December, 2018.

One of the eye witness who gave his name as Chukwudi Nwachukwu said “This morning, I was inside my shop when I heard someone screaming-thief? Thief”, I rushed outside to find out what was happening and discovered that two young men (names yet to be discovered) were attempting to steal our neighbour’s car but were apprehended”.

“When inquired what transpired, the young man who raised the alarm (name withheld) said he noted the suspicious movement of the two suspects immediately they were dropped by a corolla car, and came out from shop where he was to observe them.

“Not quite long, they headed towards the car. One was forcefully trying to unlock the car from the driver’s side with a master key while the other was leaning on that side of the car to prevent people from noticing what was happening”. He said.

“Knowing that they were not the owner of the car after approaching them, he raised the alarm and caught the attention of other residents who came and got hold of them”.

“Immediately the driver that dropped the suspects saw what was happening at the other end where they were parked, they zoomed off and left them behind.” He stressed

The owner of the vehicle, Hon. Leonard Chinedu Okoro, special assistant to Imo state governor on Property Recovery, and also owner of a business centre at the vicinity said “it was not quite long in the morning that I came in, parked my car and stepped into my shop, only to come out after I heard someone’s scream, and was approached with the shocking story of two men who attempted to steal my
“Many cars have been stolen in this terrain, without any clues of who, when and how they disappear.

“It is high time the vigilante and other security agents beef up their security to curtail this criminal act which is now on the rise,” Okoro said.

He further commended the youths of the arena who according to him are always at alert to ensure the safety of people and their properties.

The suspects are now in the custody of the Imo State Criminal and Investigation department for further investigation.

As at the time of filing the report, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Ikokwu Olando when contacted, said he has not been briefed about the case but promised to inquire and give feedback.
