The Ogun State Police Command says it has arrested a 38-year-old butcher, Shina Kasali, for allegedly beating his wife, Sofiat, to death.
The incident occurred on Saturday 1st December 2018 at Abosule area of Agbado in Ifo Local Government Area of the state, during a minor disagreement between the couple.
The couple’s neighbour, Tunde Babatunde, was said to have reported the incident at the Agbado Police Divisional headquarters.
The couple was said to have had a minor disagreement before the tragedy struck.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the deceased had wanted to go out and fetch water while the suspect asked her not to go yet.
He stated further that the argument led to a scuffle between the two, consequent upon which the suspect beat the deceased to a coma.
He said Sofiat died while she was being taken to the hospital.
Based on the report made by the couple’s neighbour, the Divisional Police Officer, Olatunji Omonijo, led detectives to the scene where the suspect was apprehended.
Oyeyemi said the suspect who claimed to be a butcher had accused his late wife of disrespecting him because his business was not doing well as of the moment.
Oyeyemi said, “The suspect explained further that on that fateful day, he was sitting down outside when the deceased came to accuse him of looking into the private part of a prostitute who sat at the opposite direction and that was what led to the disagreement that led to her death.”
He said the corpse of the victim had been deposited in the mortuary at Ifo General Hospital for post-mortem investigation.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
