As the World celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, Girls and Youth Re – integration Network (GYRIN) has called on Nigerians to support the girl-child to attain the right potentials.

National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of GYRIN, Awujoola Kehinde charity said in a statement that girls had the power to change the World if given the right opportunity.

She said that adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated and healthy life, not only in their critical formative years, but also as they mature into women.

“If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s mothers, workers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads and political leaders.

“An investment in realising the power of adolescent girls uphold their rights today and promises a more equitable and prosperous future, one in which half of humanity is an equal partner in Solving the problems facing the globe.

“We are to encourage and inspire our girls to have the courage to be, love, honour and celebrate themselves.

“This should not be a onetime occurance though. Let us always strive to instill principles and values in our ladies and each other. Let us challenge them to explore the unknowns.

“No society will flourish and no peace agreement will be lasting without empowering girls in peace building and reconstruction.

“Finally, everyday presents the opportunity for them to use their voices in their community to make a powerfully positive impact by being authentic, unapologetic and genuine,” she said.

She harped on the need to end violence against women in every form.

“Violence against women and girls is a stain on our social fabric.

“On this day of the Girl child, I call on all stakeholders and those in authority to honour their commitment to end all violence against women and girls.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that International Day Of The Girl Child is a day set aside by the United Nations to draw attention to the need to address the challenges girls face around the world and to promote girl’s empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

It is annually celebrated on October 11th, the theme for this year’s day of the girl child is “EmPOWER Girls: Before, During and After Conflict.
