Nkwerre Community in Imo State has been thrown into a state of anger and restiveness following the gruesome killing of one of their kinsmen in his early sixties identified as Mr. Emmanuel Onuoha and his four year old grandchild.
Speaking, Mr. Ukonu Ojukwu, principal officer, security affairs for Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu and Njaba Federal constituency said that the dare devil gang of child kidnappers who have been terrorizing Nkwerre and Nwangele Local Government areas stormed the residence of the victim near the Community Central School, Obinocha, Nkwerre, last Thursday at about 8pm while the man was said to be preparing dinner for his grandson. The report went further to state that trouble ensued when the man resisted attempts by the criminal gang to kidnap his grandson.
It was further gathered that while the struggle for possession of the boy between him and the abductors lasted, the little boy was said to have slumped when his head hit the wall in the struggle. On noticing that the child had died from the effects of the squabble , the gang descended on the man with clubs and machete and killed him before fleeing the scene. Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Nkwerre Community, HRH Eze C.J Okwara (Eshi of Nkwerre) has expressed anger, outrage and total condemnation of the criminal activities of the gang even as he put a curse and invoked the wrath of God on them pointing out that with the recent killings, their days are surely numbered.
Eze Okwara further expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family and solicited the assistance of the Imo State government and the Commissioner of Police towards expedited arrest of the criminal gang even as he called for regular training of members of Imo Security Network (ISN) and Imo Community Watch (ICW) on modern method of crime intelligence gathering, prevention and combat and also ensure that the two groups work in synergy to assist the police and other security agencies to rid the society of miscreants. When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer of Nkwerre, CSP Benjamin Okwara confirmed the incident. He said that his divisional crime officer assisted to deposit the corpse of the victims in a mortuary and assured that his men are doing everything within their powers to apprehend the culprits in line with the CP directives.
The DPO further stated that he was barely two weeks old in the command and assured the entire people of Nkwerre LGA of adequate security while soliciting for the revival and institution of a strong PCRC in Nkwerre police division. It was gathered that the criminal gang had in the past struck in various communities of Nkwerre/Nwangele LGA’s abducting children, leaving blood and anguish in their trail.
