A fresh Graduate of Imo State University, Owerri, IMSU, has been murdered in cold blood by students suspected to be cultists.

It was  learnt that the killed fresh graduate, Obrin Ibekwe was gunned down, around 2.05pm, Tuesday, at the back gate area of the citadel of learning. It was revealed that the dead student was a fresh graduate of the Institution who come to do his clearance for the one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, program.

Source in the varsity who said that the killing could not be unconnected to cultism, said that the deceased was shot by fleeing young men who are believed to be students of the same university. Another source said that the Late Ibekwe was shot together with another fresh graduate, who was seriously injured on the shoulder and recuperating in a hospital in Owerri, the State Capital.
He said that the death was necessitated by two warring cult groups on the campus, who waited till Tuesday to have their own pound of flesh.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state,  Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, confirmed the killing and further disclosed that the deceased lifeless body which was found in a gutter at the back gate part of the campus has been evacuated to the Morgue.

The police spokesperson who could neither confirm the course of study nor place of Origin of the murdered simply said “yes, I can confirm to you the murdering of one Obrin Ibekwe, a fresh graduate of Imo State University, Owerri. He was doing his clearance before he was murdered at the back gate of the school.

Mr Enwerem who could not ascertain, as at press time the cause of the killing, enthused that the police have evacuated the lifeless body which he said was found in a gutter, further revealing that investigations have started in earnest with the aiming of unveiling the cause of the schooling and as well as apprehending the killers.

Meanwhile, reactions have continued to trail the senseless killing, as Imolites across walks of life have seriously condemned the killing.

Mr. Ifeanyi Maduako said “Oh! Parents investment and heritage wasted! It is high time cultists were treated like armed robbers. Hon Ekwe Scotte Ekwe who condemned the killing, queried why students should engage in cultism. He said “This young man was sent by his parents to study in IMSU. This is who he paid back for all the resources his parents spent to see him through school”.
