The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared as inconclusive the keenly contested and tensioned soaked Okigwe zone Senatorial district rerun election, conducted Saturday in Imo State.

Consequently, a supplementary election has been ordered in 15 polling units in Isiala Mbano, Ehime Mbano and Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Areas, LGAs, where voting did not take place on the said election day.

Declaring the election inconclusive, the INEC returning officer for the election, Mr. Arinze Agbogu informed that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu scored 48, 921 votes, while his closest rival, Senator Athan Achonu, of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, polled 40,142 votes. Mr. Agbogu informed that the supplementary election becomes imperative following the fact that voting strength of the pending 15 units where election did not hold is 13,000 registered voters which is Hon. Uwajumogu is leading Sen. Achonu.

It was  equally gathered that the State House of Assembly re-run elections at Isiala Mbano, Oru West and Owerri West constituencies were won by the APC candidates.

The electoral umpire informed that the supplementary election will take place on or before end of July.
Meanwhile, investigation revealed that the Okigwe senate re-run election d was greeted with voter apathy across the senatorial district, as most polling units recorded scanty turnout of people.
Apart from the Senatorial re-run election, rerun elections equally took place in Isiala Mbano, Oru East and part of Owerri West State Constituencies.

For the Okigwe Senate rerun election, while accreditations and voting started early in Okigwe, Onuimo and Obowo Local Government Areas of the zone, owing to early arrival of sensitive materials, it was a different scenario in Isiala Mbano and Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, because of late arrival of electoral materials.

While there were records of squabbles, the leadership of the police in the state, said that the exercise experienced peace.

The Police Public Relations Officers in the state, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, informed that the police dealth with all issues that could had nailed the smooth flow of the pool.

Mr. Enwerem who disclosed that the police were fully mobilized for the election, communicated that a Deputy Inspector General of Police, together with the Commissioner of police in the state, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu led the operation for a violet free election.

As the time of filing  this report, the police spokesperson informed that police officers had taken of the premise of the Independent National electoral Commission, INEC, Okigwe where the result of the election would be announced.

While few LGAs, had arrived the rerun collation centre in Okigwe town, others are still at there various LGAs collation centers, late in the night waiting the arrival of the result.
These were equally reports of violence in some pooling booths in Isiala Mbano LGA, which annulled election in the units.

Violence greeted the rerun election Oru-East state constituency, as there was allegation of gun shots.
The election in some parts of Owerri West, did not record any observed violence, as voters did not turnout to the pooling booths as expected.
