The police men, he said, are there for the security of lives and property, and require information and tip-off from the public before they can effectively serve the society in maintaining law and order. This he said is why community policing and local vigilante are being encouraged as partners in the security of lives but regretted that the society has spoilt police through incessant demands for preferential treatment.
To this end, the PRRO reiterates that bail for crime suspects where possible especially for civil offences is free but that both the suspects and their relations are the ones who are regularly enticing and corrupting the police and in most cases, the people are willing to pay any amount of money to secure freedom through bail. He added that many of the arrested and detained suspects are always in a hurry to get out of the detention cells even when they are there for their safety and interrogation and in the process induce the police with such amounts of irresistible money. The PPRO also blames those motorists who rather than secure genuine motor particulars prefer to drive without such official documentation and when accosted at the police check-points, go on to give the police money in order to escape prosecution. He therefore warned motorists against this act of inducement and criminal resort to offering of gratifications. He then advised citizens to be vigilante at all times especially these days of security breaches with Boko Haram and other militant groups, throwing and planting bombs while others resort to suicide bombing, taking their precious lives as well in order to settle scores or constitute public nuisances. He also decries the attitude of some Nigerian youths who in a bid to get rich quick, resort to all forms of criminal activities. Speaking further, he referred the youths whom he describes as constituting more than 70% of the total population to engage in innovations that can elevate their social values like the man who founded the social media WHATSAPP, now globally recognized and appreciated. The WHATSAPP founder according to him did not allow himself to be frustrated, or resort to crimes after several affairs he made to secure gainful employment failed. Rather he went into research, and discovered that he possesses a creative ingenuity that has since transformed the world of internet communication technology and social media.
